Rick's Rules For Internet Safety

 

  1. Check your virus signature file date often.
  2. Use a hardware router or the Windows XP firewall
  3. Turn the Windows XP auto update feature on.
  4. Do not visit websites that advertise BARGAINS, OFFERS, DEALS, or REBATES.  picture1   picture2
  5. Do not download SEARCH BARS, HUNT BARS, TOOL BARS, or DEAL BARS. picture
  6. Do not download anything that has the "words" MY, COOL or FREE in it, including cursors and smileys.  picture1   picture2
  7. Do not download any of the following:  KAZAA, LIMEWIRE, GATOR, SLINGO, GAIN, BONZI BUDDY, COMET CURSOR, GO HIP or any MEDIA VIEWER.  picture1   picture2   picture3 
  8. Do not download anything which OPTIMIZES your PC or your Internet Connection
  9. Do not download PC CLOCK SYNCHRONIZERS or WEATHER ALERTS.
  10. Do not download POPUP blockers or SPYWARE removers.
  11. Do not visit LYCOS.COM or download anything that has Lycos in its name.  picture
  12. Download MICROSOFT or WINDOWS products only from  - www.microsoft.com.
  13. Immediately leave a website which prompts you to download files to view the site properly. picture
  14. There are no exceptions to these rules.

 

Rick's Rules for E-mail Safety

 
  1. Abide by rules 1 to 3 above
  2. Do not "open" messages from people you don't know.  Delete them.
  3. Do not "open" advertisements unless specifically requested.  Delete them.
  4. Do not "open" messages with sexual content.  Delete them.
  5. Delete "all" messages requesting personal financial information.
  6. Delete "all" messages written in broken English or that have peculiar subject lines..
  7. Delete "all" messages with ZIP, TXT, SCR, VBS, JPG attachments from people you don't know.
  8. Do not reply to a message covered in 2. through 7. above.
  9. Think very carefully before opening "any" attachment regardless of how well you know the sender.
  10. Do not click unsubscribe buttons.
  11. Do not forward virus warnings
  12. Do not forward chain letters
  13. If it sounds too good to be true, it is.  Delete it.
  14. There are no exceptions to these rules.

 

Penalties for non compliance: 

$75 first offense, $150 second offense.
